There was an article in New Scientist I think which said that men and women have different levels of tolerance to different types of pain ie men are better at tolerating severe acute pain such as a broken leg than women, but women are better at tolerating longer lasting pain than men. Apparently some sort of evolutionary throwback to allow men to cope with getting trodden on by woolly mammoth while out hunting and women to cope with childbirth!

Hmm interesting theory, I do recall seeing something similar a while back - not sure if that was in New Scientist or not, it was during my studenty days. Could you find a link to the article, or is that not available?
