    Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round

The organisers have finalised the route for the new race for Stan Bradshaw which will replace the Half Tour Of Pendle. I know some have been disappointed by the changes from the Half Tour route, but the organisers have been considering these for a couple of years to ease the erosion on parts of the hill.

The proposed check points are shown below. Maps will be available from Pete Bland Sports.

Start Car park entrance in Barley Village GR823403
CP1 Gate beyond trig point GR805418
    CP2 Scout Cairn GR789413
CP3 Gate to Calf Hill GR779386
    CP4 Wood House Brook-wall/stream GR797385
    CP5 Dam-Upper Ogden Resr. GR807396
CP6 Fell Gate at Buttock GR807401
Finish Outside Barley Village Hall GR822402

Comments on the route are welcome and will be taken into account when considering next year's race.

Should be a good one. There's a bit of scope for route choice, and at least it will carve a different scar on the mountain!

It'll be interesting to see if the faint trod from the scout cairn to the ogden clough track becomes better defined over the next couple of months. Would have been useful last friday night; would have saved me trotting around in confusion for half an hour!

Just done a recce of the SBPR plus a few extra climbs up the front, is CP4 the same CP as the Pendle Cloughs CP5? I make the GR797385 as a wall further up the Woodhouse Brook which would mean crossing a few of the new fences and climbing through the newly planted trees?

I made it further up th'ill as well. Looks like route crosses PC CP5 (the little 'funnel' between the two walls), but I found you don't need to go into the bit with the newly planted trees.

After the 'funnel', there's a wire fence ahead that rises off to the left. But there is a gap between this fence and the wall on your right.

Go through this gap, and straight on - by my reckoning. This will see you hit the CP at the wall ahead after a climb up the hill.

Next, best thing appears to be left at the wall and follow it to the wire fence at which point you can follow that up the hill.

I veered off a bit at this point - (was too windy to be consulting maps so was doing it from what I'd memorised at the stone shelter on top of Pendle...and badly!), but came back to it and found if you keep the fence on your left (i.e. the side without the newly planted trees), you will eventually come to a gate in a wall from where you can choose from two footpaths (marked with the yellow arrows).

Follow the one on the right, and you'll drop down just above the dam at the upper reservoir (CP5).
