    Knee Pain

Hi , had stiff knee when running for a while now. Yesterday i went running up snowdonia, after about 3-4 miles i noticed a pain in knee , i kep going until about 15miles then it was really bad, couldnt run downhill had to walk(flat was bearable if steady, uphill noticed pain but could run normally). Today its slightly painful when walking and the longer i walk the worse it gets but pain bearable not taken anything. When i try walking upstairs or downstairs it hurts like shooting pains . Pain seems to be on front of knee left side. Any ideas what it is? should i just rest a couple of days? if i could run in 2 days with pain killers would that be ok or rest for longer until pain completely gone??
    Thanks for any advice

Knees are complex joints. I'd go and see a physio and get it checked out asap. Good luck

In my experience knee injuries are the last thing you want to try and run through so suggest if you cannot get to physio follow the R.I.C.E protocol i.e. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Rest and ice probably most important

Can you post a few more details?
Which knee? Medial or Lateral? Above/below joint line? etc

It is my left knee. Pain is on the front left side, roughly halfway down knee cap!

Actually on the kneecap itself or on the fleshy part by the side? Classic ITB symptoms are for pain whilst running in bit just outside of the knee cap, on the fleshy bit.

    Fozzy just looked up ITB

    • Pain on the outside of the knee (at or around the lateral epicondyle of the femur).
    • Tightness in the iliotibial band (see assessment)
    • Pain normally aggravated by running, particularly downhill.
    • Pain during flexion or extension of the knee, made worse by pressing in at the side of the knee over the sore part.
    • Weakness in hip abduction.
    • Tender trigger points in the gluteal area may also be present.

    Definately have 3 and 4.
