The Short Race is not a bad one to navigate. There are enough people for you to follow without getting lost.

You start at the pub, and go up the Walna Scar Track for about half a mile to a gate. You then climb steeply on a bearing of 118 to a Quarry Building (Caw Quarry). Then head on a slightly-rising contour (85 bearing) for 500m to the Wall Corner at 235950: then continue along the wall NE for 400m (still on a contour) until it turns sharp left down the fell (don't go down). Instead carry on contouring round the fell heading at a 53 degree bearing to the Walna Scar Quarry Building about 30m above a main track. Then drop onto the track (heading NE): it soon comes to a wall which you then follow (NE then NW) to a wall corner (CP3). Then go up the ridge on a 90 degree bearing up Dow Crag to a grassy plateau 20m short of the summit rocks (CP4).

After that the route is the same as for the Long Duddon: either over Buck & Brown Pikes on the path to Walna Scar pass (easier to find) or do a gradually dropping contour to the right of them to drop to Walna Scar pass.

The next bit is where people sometimes (in mist) might go wrong. Follow a faint path along the ridge. After 500m don't bear left (faint path) up to White Maiden: instead contour round to the right past White Maiden then up onto White Pike.

Getting off White Pike is steep: don't head direct towards Caw! Either go back 10m in the direction you came in from, then head W down a reasonable gully and scree by the quarry workings. Or go South down a grassy steep nose.

Then head along the Wall just to the right of Green Pikes then contour & climb onto Caw (you eventually get onto a trod). After Caw, come back on yourself for 500m on the path until you are down at a col/ stream head, before heading down (soon with a wall on your right) to the final checkpoint (a marked gap in the wall). From there its flagged to the finish.

All Grid Refs are on the Duddon Valley Fell Race website.

Enjoy it, if you decide to do it. You'll be finished in good time to see the winners of the Long Race arrive.
