No, nor is there any need for "top athletes" to do so
good nutrition is good nutrition whatever form it comes in - be it the humble bag of jelly babies or an overpriced, over-marketed packet of shot blocks.
Why do top athletes use these things ?
Becuse they are paid to do so to assist the marketing of overpriced pseudo-scientifically justified products.

    example
I once examined the nutritional information on a carton of post race energy sports drink It was from Boots so relatively inexpensive at £10 for 500g (note relative to other brands).
On reading the label it told me what I got if I mixed it with water.
then it told me what I got if I mixed it with milk.
Basically the nutritional elements doubled if I drank it mixed with milk.
Which leads to one simple conclusion.
Post race energy sports drink is just milk powder.
So I checked against a carton of Marvel milk powder (maybe £2 from Tesco) and Tesco's own - even cheaper.
    Theory confirmed.

So for a post race energy sports drink save yourself a fortune and buy own brand milk powder, or, if you prefer, have a pint of milk, which is much nicer

I have carried out similar comparisons between various sports bars and jaffa cakes, fig rolls etc, to see which has a higher carb content. As I recall, jaffas edged it over fig rolls, both beat sports bars. And I know an opened packet of jaffas will last the best part of a fortnight in a rucksack!

I am in total agreement with Andy K and PB here. I have never bought a gel/sports bar/sports drink in my life. After a gym session I consume an orange and some organic skimmed milk, while the proper body builders fiddle around mixing their expensive and doubtless disgusting whey protein. I do wonder if they know that whey is something you get in milk.
    Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

I can't make an opened pack of Jaffas last more than five minutes. Especially if I've got a cup of tea too.

I took a bit of spicy sausage out with me the other day, just as a savoury change from the jaffas and honey butty. But I had trouble digesting it, it was repeating a bit going up Ingleboro, so I'll probably give chorizo a miss from now on. Anyone know something easily digestible and savoury? Oh, and easily packed, too.

Individual portions of cheese or babybel cheeses. A wrap rolled up with primula squeezy cheese or for fast show lovers 'Squeezy cheesy peas'.

I have tried salted pnuts but they tent to get in your mouth a bit.

    Nuts.

chew them well, and I find I need a drink to moisten the mouth and wash them down.
a good ham sarnie is nice too.
