    Windermere, Fred Whitton, BG!!

    Morning,

Late notice but seeing if anybody is please free to help my fiancee??

Starting at 3am Friday 12th August Michelle and her mum are planning to:
    1. Swim lake Windermere
    2. Cycle the Fred Whitton
    3. Run/walk the Bob Graham (looking to complete in circa 28 hours).
They are looking for help on the Bob Graham section which they are looking to start at 12 on Saturday lunch time.

If anybody is free to help I would appreciate if you could please drop me her a line on 07825004648 or an email on [email protected]

    Thanks in advance,

    Tom Rothwell

    Re: Windermere, Fred Whitton,

Psst.... It's Winder MERE not 'lake Windermere'. There's only one Lake in the Lake District and that isn't it.

...impressive thing to attempt, by the way.

Correct! Well Done Fellhound, however for those that live there refer to it as lake Windermere. Mere is an old fashioned word and we now live in the 21st Century!

    Re: Windermere, Fred Whitton,

Living there doesn't give you the right to b**tardise the language, otherwise I'd rename Blackburn 'Allt Dubh' (sounds much better, though a bit old fashioned in the 21st century I'll admit)

    Apologies for hijacking the thread...

Having grown up within a couple of miles of Windermere (the body of water not the town) we always call it Windermere, perhaps it's the off-comers who've got it wrong :sneaky:

As for old fashioned words - let's get rid of "fell", "beck", "foss", "tarn" and all those other pesky terms left to us in the 9th century by the Vikings, they must be past their sell-by date by now. What about all those place names ending in "by", surely we can come up with something more 21st century?

    'By', ie 'town', like 'Whitby'.

    Here's one for you: 'Gate'.

I used to think street names ending in 'gate', such as 'Churchgate' where I live, came from some sort of gate there used to be to the town. Apparently it's from the Scandinavian 'Gate', pronounced 'garter', which means 'street'.

Not very helpful on the attempt. Sorry! But good luck.
