I'll drink if and when I'm thirsty ta, not because it'll make me faster but because I'm thirsty (ok, probably wouldn't bother on a shortish sub 2hr run)
    Thanks for you valuable input.

What if you didnt drink to thirst and you were amongst the tens of thousands of runners that have been fed bad hydration advice for years; by the machine that is the sports drink companies. What if toliet breaks ruined your Marathon or fell race.

This is why it is important and not as trivial as you are suggesting.

Easy tiger, a two line comment was never meant to be "valuable input"

Having read through this thread though, it does seem difficult to produce accurate advice for all runners without creating advice for individual runners. There seems to be a relatively wide range of perspiration levels between different runners. I will perspire to some degree regardless of temperature (possibly the cake sourced insulation). It's almost like you need a sliding scale of some sort to determine the requirements of each individual rather than just x amount per hour.

I'd agree there shaun - I really sweat a phenomenal amount, more than anyone I know and that hasn't changed as I've got fitter. In fact probably worse, as I can now keep higher workrates going for longer.

It does mean I have to carry more fluid than I'd ideally like to on ALs - depending on available water en route.

Luckily for me there's no need to carry lots of water with me, plenty of streams and springs to choose from on the long runs (almost makes up for the midge)

Probably the most sensible statement ive read so far. Every one is different and we each have our own requirements when it comes to hydration.
    An interesting debate.
    Still too heavy to run
