We are looking to book a week in the Scotland - probably somewhere around Fort William -to do some fell running, probably around early September. Can anyone recommend any self-catering accommodation (lodges, apartments, cottages etc.) in a good location for exploring the mountains?

I'd head up the road abit to Spean Bridge. you've still access to the ben but in a prettier location. FW is not a nice little village

Looks like a nice area, looking at onich and blaich area too.
Do you know what it's like there? We don't really want to be driving too far for any runs or amenities.
What are the fells like in that area? Would like to get a decent amount of running in.

I'd go a bit further up the west coast - Kintail is fantastic.
I also like the Strontian area on Loch Sunart.
Any where North of the great Glen will be much quieter and has plenty of great running, Get hold of the classi SMC Munros book for ideas. There's lots of nice horseshoes along the Glen Spean road and you could head East to Newtonmore and come down A9 over Dromochter pass lots of running in all these areas, Some long runs in to the cairngorms are fantastic but expect a long day out.
Looking like Spean Bridge is gonna be a good place to stay. Just got to get the time off work now. Whats the weather like at the end of August?

If they are bad then go further East, they don't seem to be as bad inland. Weather well it could be so hot to burn the skin off your arms or so wet as to wash it off, more likely to be some where in between.
Yes, definitely midgey....and it looks like it could be a bumper year for them. Already been driven inside by them over the last week, and that seems early.
As IDP says, head East to avoid them. Whilst we have them up here north of Inverness, friends at Pitlochry say they don't get them at all. Lots of good running down that way, Beinn A Ghlo being a cracking day out, plus some great mountain passes to run over.
Personally,I wouldn't go near the West coast in summer because of the midges....although a Ramsay recce or two might tempt me this year
