most sinlge grains after twelve years (in the cask- not after twelve years off the shelf!) are normally palatable, for a proper smoked Scottish there are so many it is up the individual taste.

Ask him what he's looking for in a whisky.

    good luck!

Waitrose have a good selection Daz, if there is one near Ilkeston? Old Pulteney is almost drinkable and I can't stand the stuff. Tastes of "Northern Scottish sea breezes" according to the bottle - I just think it tastes like whisky.

If you had joined the Gentlemen Fell Runners expedition in 2006, you would have benefited from the Whisky tasting competition - single malts .

Your Grandad is not an old bugger, he is a grandad of taste and refinement. I am sure this will be re-iterated by Wheeze and other malt lovers on the site
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.

Discerning choice is the preserve COG's (Crusty Old Codgers). So cut us some slack, remind him he means a single MALT whisky and tip some Highland Park down his neck...that'll shut him up.

There are two major categories, single and blended. Single means that all of the product is from a single distillery, while Blended means that the product is composed of whiskies from two or more distilleries.

Single malt whisky is a 100% malted barley whisky from one distillery.

Single grain whisky is a grain whisky from one distillery (it does not have to be made from a single type of grain).

Vatted or blended malt whisky is a malt whisky created by mixing single malt whiskies from more than one distillery.

Blended grain whisky is a whisky created by mixing grain whiskies from more than one distillery.

Blended Scotch whisky is a mixture of single malt whisky and grain whisky, usually from multiple distilleries.
Now you know and can enjoy whisky.

Note: Scotch whisky should NEVER be confused with whiskey from other countries.
