Even if the birth rate halves our population will continue to rise until someone gets a grip on illegal and economic immigration.

According to the article linked by Wheeze, we will need all these migrants to pay taxes and contributions into our pension funds, to ensure that us oldies don't starve in our retirement. The "get a grip" we need is to make the illegals legal.

Yeap, I've read that too Wheeze, although there's some division of opinion on how things might pan out. According to Wiki (so it must be true!)

" An alternative scenario is given by the statistician Jorgen Randers, who argues that traditional projections insufficiently take into account the downward impact of global urbanization on fertility. Randers' "most likely scenario" reveals a peak in the world population in the early 2040s at about 8.1 billion people, followed by decline.[106] Adrian Raftery, a University of Washington professor of statistics and of sociology, states that "there’s a 70 percent probability the world population will not stabilize this century"[107.]"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

The chart on the RH side of this link shows the claimed possible variability in predictions.

Even a stabilized population at 7.3 billion is massive for the planet to sustain if it's mostly consumerist focused.

I think we're also already seeing the effect of people in materially poorer parts of the globe believing that all is gold in western Europe and North America with movements northwards for a piece of the cake by any means.

Totally agree that the world is hugely over-populated.
Yes, I think you're right. Those sort of approaches look encouraging as an alternative. Maybe it's a shame we hadn't tried these decades ago before we got into this mess. Lance Corporal Fraser gave us a heads up too...

Seems that there has been a failure in recognising the true potential of the project, to blinkered by percuniary costs to see the long term advantages and benefits in further developement.

Mind you the Scottish project gives real hope.

I'd also imagine that Big Oil played its part in discouraging any real alternatives to liquid hydrocarbon sources of energy. I also recall that 20 years ago we could buy our domestic heating oil for 14p a litre!

Their Thorium reactor should go live this autumn. I really hope this goes well. Should release us from the severe restrictions facing old school reactors.

Ha! So it has!! Inscrutable Chinese at it again.
Try this. Its an 18 minute lecture. The first 10 minutes goes over the history of nuclear power and its issues. The last 8 minutes gives a current overview of where we are and where we are going with Thorium MSR's. So you could skip the first bit, but it gives great context.
