    FRA Rules on Kit (Compass)

Hi, doing my first race on Sunday which specifies i need full FRA kit. I have everything but the only compass i have at the moment is not a silva type one, it is just a bog standard circular compass which is not really suited for navigating. That said, it is only a short race and I believe the only reason that kit is required is in case weather changes.

Will i pass a kit inspection with this type of compass?

Probably not. Get a proper compass.

It's up to the RO, applying these rules:

    9 EQUIPMENT
Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment:-
    a. Windproof whole body cover.
    b. Other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions.
    c. Map and compass suitable for navigating the course.
    d. Whistle.
    e. Emergency food (long races).
These requirements constitute “best practice” and are mandatory at all Category A Long and Medium races.
However any race organiser is free to impose additional safety requirements (e.g. waterproof as distinct from
windproof whole body cover) and competitors must be prepared to accept such requirements as a condition
    of race entry.
In the event of settled fine weather, confirmed by a local weather report, the organiser may decide to waive
some of the above requirements for races of other categories.
Organisers must ensure that whatever requirements they specify on the day are met by holding complete or
random checks before and after the start of the race.

I still use mine that originally came in heel of Clarkes Pathfinder shoes, gave me blisters (the shoes not the compass) if I remember.

Hi Chris do you know how to use your bog standard compass, if you do,(people went round the world with bog standard types) its better than having a flash one and not knowing what to do with it, when you look to getting another, get one with a large base plate for ease of use when taking bearings. Hope you have a good run.

The ones with the different animal footprints on the sole?

The Vikings got to North America with a bit of lodestone dangling on some string. Try that on a RO.

Apparently Billy Bland navigated his way round his record breaking BG by pulling a stick out of his arse and taking a bearing by the shadow cast upon the ground...

Does that count as 'outside assistance'?

Did he use a watch or a sun-dial in order to calculate the lat and long?

One of his pacers had a stone sun dial strapped to his back - they make em tough in Cumbria.
