    Head torch recommendations

I know that there is a recent thread on a particular head torch but I need to get a new head torch asap and so want some options. I want one that's good enough for fell running in winter and so not too heavy. Don't need it to double up for my bike as I have a good bike specific light.

Don't want the most expensive bit of kit on the market but doesn't have to be cheap and cheerfuleither. Rather it did the job well and lasts.

    Recommendations please

I've got the Petzl Myo XP headtorch - http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/myo-series/myo-xp. It's brilliant! I've done a lot of winter fell running using it and find it's more than bright enough. Its wide angle lens is a great addition and it really lights up an area. Battery life is good as well, only changed the batteries twice since buying it last summer and I use it a lot. It's recently had a month stint in the Alps/Pyrenees where it was used for a good few hours most nights on the campsite or at bivi spots and for 3am alpine starts and the batteries are still going strong!

Anyone ever tried to use night-vision goggles? Serious question.

Must concur with Sam, I've got a Petzl Myo and it really does the business, plenty bright enough for what I need and the diffuser/spot beam is very effective, batteries seem to last forever also. Not as bright as the Hope headtorches, but nowhere near as expensive either!

I broke the clip on the central strap (my fault) and the UK distributors got a spare clip (spares, actually) out to me in 24 hours.

I have used a Petzl Tikka XP for the last 3 years for night runs and camping and its been great. I also have a LED Lenser which is brighter than the Petzl but I don't like the headtorches with the batteries separate from the torch itself. I can never get them comfortable on my head and they are always slipping when I work up a sweat. My daughter took the Petzl with her to the Leeds festival at the weekend and she was impressed with it as well. The XP was updated in 2009 as the XP2 with a more powerful beam. The batteries seem to last for ages as well.

Also the Black Diamond Icon, similar light levels to the MYO XP, low power flood LEDS for climbing, central spot beam for descending. Works well for me & I'm used to dual 800 lumen mountain bike lights.

LED Lenser 7. There were many good reviews about this torch that I nearly got one. I ended up with the LED Lenser 14 which is superb. Used on the Fellsman & LDWA 100 this year. The '14' has a detachable battery pack that can be worn on a belt or put in a rucksac/bumbag. The '7' is smaller and lighter and both have excellent focusable beams, from flood to spot by simply pulling/pushing the light housing.

I had a Myo and it was OK for looking at the gas meter under the stairs.

But start doing night races (as in the BRILLIANT! Bedlamites DVD) and once you have seen the light after someone passes you wearing a Hope and you have been cast into eternal darkness wearing your puny Petzl you will regret the day you decided to live without Hope.
