A couple more easy runs, either side of an orienteering event. The comfort after wearing shoes with a relatively thin midsole is really noticeable, and it makes the “day after a hard run” run feel a lot easier. The comfort isn’t at the expense of weight though, as I’ve mentioned before these shoes are pretty light and certainly lighter than they look; the website has the technical details about materials/construction etc. The problem with the laces is sorted out, the initial stretchiness of them has worn off and I don't have to stop to tighten them.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2013986 the cobbled descent from Peel Tower: this is usually a real bone-jarring section of a run, but today the cushioning took the sting out of it. Those of you with long memories may remember it as the last bit of the Three Towers race, that was a real killer after 20 miles.
This review process is now at the half way point and I’m continuing to be impressed. Are they worth the money? Well, with these shoes I am running on more consecutive days than previously: today was number 6 on the trot, unusual for me. I’ve gone through the 100 mile barrier and they still look good after a quick rinse under the cold tap. They have been used on a wide variety of surfaces and they grip well, are comfortable and stable. So the final answer will depend on just how long they last…

This evening I put to the test Karhu's claim of "360 degrees of reflectivity", giving Mrs Mc a chance to try out her new camera. Lighting is courtesy of Hope.
The shiny bits do stand out, so that claim stands up. In between the expensive head torch and pricey shoes, the cost conscious amongst you will be relieved to know I was wearing an Aldi top and Karrimor leggings.

The latest thing I’ve noticed with these shoes is that my feet aren’t as hot and sweaty. And the evidence is clear: you know when you take your shoes off after a run and you get damp footprints on the path or kitchen floor? (Or is that just me?) The trail is much less defined after wearing the Karhu; maybe the fabric soaks up and traps the sweat and that is why the shoes are smelly. If that is the case it just shows how every silver lining has a cloud.

Now that winter has arrived and the mud has got worse the off-road limitations of these are becoming more apparent and so they’ll be getting less use (until the ground freezes anyway). When cleaned up they show little sign of wear, even near the toes where I usually break through the fabric.
With a rinse and a wipe they clean up well, as you can see:

Happy New Year to our readers!
I can’t be the only one who is sick of mud, what happened to the big freeze? I blame the councils for being ready with the grit and the shops for having lots of
snow shovels in stock. Anyway, I’ve been picking my way round on farm tracks trying to avoid the worse of the mud, it has made for some circuitous routes and
I’ve still ended up with wet feet but as I’ve mentioned before the Karhu shoes dry out pretty quickly and they don’t get heavy when wet. I’ve done about 170 miles in them and still appreciate the comfort they provide, especially the day after a hard run.

    Re: Karhu: watch this space

Some real criticism this time: I’ve poked my big toe through on the right shoe. This has happened with most brands of shoes I have worn that but as these are top end/expensive it is disappointing after less than 200 miles (probably 2 or 3 weeks training for Mo Farah or Paula Radcliffe!). I’m not sure how long it has taken with other shoes as I’ve not kept a record previously. As they are still in good condition everywhere else and still really comfortable I’ll get them patched properly rather than doing a bit of darning. It seems a shame as there is a strip of tough material that extends from the eyelet section to the vamp; if this was moved slightly it would prevent the big toe coming through: of course that might affect the comfort. I would like to know why do so many shoes have this weak spot, or is it my feet that are the problem?

    Re: Karhu: watch this space

My toes don't touch the end of my shoes, the hole is about a half inch back from the end. If I got shoes half size smaller, the big toe would be more likely to be directly underneath the tougher material than the soft part of the upper but then there wouldn't be the finger's width space that is usually suggested between my toe and the end of the shoe.

ps I'm not the only one with this problem: http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...145688&SP=&V=2
