I rarely leave home for any kind of trip (racing, training, holiday, whatever) without a Patagonia top, capilene or merino.

Favourite capilene is the lightweight, silkweight great in warm weather.

Expensive, but bomb-proof build quality; I have a heavier capilene long sleved top which is over 10 years old, barely a mark on it, used week in, week out during the colder months.

Icebreaker (Merino) is warm but gets damp and does not dry as quickly as the Helly. Wouldn't run with the Icebreaker as a base layer.

Icebreaker Merino for when it's cold, but do get heavy when wet. My current favourites are Odlo Evolution or the Odlo Warm Originals. Have a look at Baselayer.com for a good selection. (and no, I have no affililiation with Baselayer before anyone asks).

I run in an icebreaker on all but hot days. can see they might get heavy when damp but I don't run that far for it to be an issue for me.

would love a helly but weirdly I can't find any that fit. the arms on the helly's are way too thin for me....and before you snigger I don't have fat arms, or even bulging biceps! the arms just won't fit me. and they seem really long in the arm.

I have two of the lighterweight HH Lifa tops but they seem to be different: the older one is a much tighter weave, much more robust and in much better nick.

The newer one is much flimsier and has little bits hanging off all over the place where I've caught it on stuff.

Normal helly Lifa for running in generally, when it gets cold, its the helly Warm- it has the helly material on the inside and merino on the out. Feels much nicer than Icebreaker, and dries faster. I've tried running in icebreaker, but just dont get on with it.
Odlo stuff is also excellent, but it hasnt been cold enough for me to run in it without combusting. Give it a couple of months and it might get used... just got to wait for snow.

There are some Merino wool winter base layers in TK Maxx at the moment...can't remember the make. They are fairly heavy but snug as hell.
