thanks every body i guess that you have rreinforced my decision. kathoola it is .
Next question when to put them on, on snow or when you hit the ice ?

If you have put on the micro spikes should they be accompanied by an icce axe? Or is this only when in the true mountains?

Micro-spikes are for frozen ground. Fell shoes with decent (and newish!) studs (Inov-8 Mudclaws or Walsh PB) grip very well on snow

If you think you will be running over any rocks get the steel ones over the ali's they will last alot longer.

If you need crampons then you should have an axe for scotland and lakes at least.. Peak you may get away with out one,

If on steep icy ground any where and you slip/fall then crampons will be useless where as an axe would stop you whizzing down the face

aye, if you slip then slide and you don't have an axe then crampons won't stop you
they will simply ensure that you spin round and go head first into the boulder.
and there is always a boulder
because it has followed the same trajectory down the slope as you.
you can get light wieght axes.

I have used these for the past two winters:http://www.kendalcamping.co.uk/produ...=&bestseller=Y
I haven't had a problem except on near vertical ice.

Bizarrely, you can hear 6 minutes audio of the sound of someone running in Rud Bergsteigers at
    http://www.alunward.co.uk/marathon/page/2/
Highlights for me are the cough at 31 secs and the scrunchy bit after the church bells just over halfway. Don't know if it supports Rodders' recommendation, but by the sound of it, at least the guy didn't slip over.

Oops, just discovered I've inadvertently downloaded the track. That'll be a surprise when it pops up on my iPod. I've got some odd stuff on there already, but not the soundtrack of somebody else jogging through snow....
