i generally carry a bumbag pete blands one with compression straps (cuts out the bouncing) or a back pack in winter conditions.
dont tend to carry water unless its tropical just drink from streams less to carry, if i do take a bottle i take a 1/2 litre platipus or running handheld bottle and put the bumbag strap through the grip hole.
but i prefer to travel lite with a bumbag water proofs, hat, gloves, map, compass,food/gels,(bivvey bag, buff, sometimes)

Appreciate a broad discussion point, but any advice welcome.

    Thanks....
I think a bumbag and a small rucksack.. you do get those who race wearing a rucksack... always annoys me that bit more when they beat me... but on a hot day I think heat loss through the back is a big factor so just a bumbag....

    Water?? rivers...

I don't like wearing a ruck sack if I can avoid it but uuse one for longer races like Jura and OCT because I reckon the advantage of carrying liquid and drinking it easily without having to faff about outweighs the disadvantage of weight but I will also try and get away with a bum bag, plastic bag straw and a couple of nuun tablets if I know there is good water en route. Horses for courses. Best start with a big bag to put all yer bum bags, rucksacks and assorted gear in. And it's supposed to be a cheap sport.
