    Footwear for icy bogs

I went out on the Dark Peak yesterday to find my feet sinking through the snow into ankle deep water, then returned to the car with what felt like blocks of wood on the ends of my legs. Can anyone advise on who best to cope with these conditions. I was wearing Inov8 Roclite 315's and wondered with Gortex shoes or waterproof socks would have made much difference.

Fully Goretex lined and the cuff at the ankle has a draw-string so you can get them super tight. Not tried a pair yet, but they're high up on my wish list!

One of my team when I first ran the HPM wore diving bootees under presumably a pair of the next size up fell shoes, which seemed completely stupid to me. In grim conditions I've found sealskin socks under normal fell shoes okay - generally on a long run like the HPM in a place like the High Peak, your feet will get really, really cold and wet from time to time but by keeping on running and maybe the odd improvement in ground conditions from time to time your feet do warm up

A decent pair of wool socks makes a big difference I reckon. Hilly (the navy and red ones), Running Bear's or Pete Bland's are all good (PB's possibly best)

You didn't mention the price - £117 reduced to ... £117! All Goretex shoes I've tried seem very stiff and uncomfortable, and IMO no amount of drawstring at the ankle will stop the shoes filling up with water if you go in really deep. And then of course, as has often been pointed out, the water can't get out.
    Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

True, and I'm not generally fan, indeed I don't own or use any at the moment, but I do think a pair of these or similar with a high snug ankle would be good for winter... though perhaps not the answer to the icy bog conundrum. I guess any kind of waterproof footwear with a membrane suffers the 'once it's in it can't get out' problem, though at least what's in does to tend to warm up, so it does have some benefit.

Why? Shoes will still get wet inside. I've always run and had warm feet with my Sealskins, and these being tighter to the foot will hold less water. I used to sell the KSB, Merrell, Berghaus goretex boots which were better but If taken over really rough ground your feet would still get wet.

I've used gortex boots at 19,000ft but there was very little moisture due to it being so cold/dry.

    Just wondered??
