Footwear for icy bogs

Went for Mudclaws/Merino lined Sealskinz socks for Brown Knoll trudge on Sunday... did the job despite wet snow, slush puddles and bogs.

yes Jake does wear size bigger to allow for this , we try his shoes out with the combination out so they fit correctly, Jake has a sensory issue so things that you and I find comfortable are not to Jake, (Jake has Autism) I use thin wool socks with sealskinz, , one set of shoes for Winter and one for summer , Jake does not as his feet are growing so we tend to buy when he needs them ,

On the basis of this thread and because a) the missus is hassling me for xmas pressie ideas and b) I haven't go any, I have asked for some Sealskinz socks. Which are the thin ones that people go for? Evan cycles seem to have a good deal on them at the moment.

Grateful if anyone can give me a clue.

Having tried them on I would suggest anyone buying Sealskinz tries them on before buying - they are an odd shape and the sizing is all wrong. I take size 9-10 shoes - the Sealskinz size 5-8 were much too big! Take the shoes you are going to wear them with to the shop so that you can try them on together. One thing that has not been mentioned on this thread is that if you keep your body warm it will help to keep your feet warm, even if they are wet. Cold body + wet feet = very cold feet.

Martyn, I've not seen the 'activity sock' before - dunno where they come in, but they don't look very high?

I agree - buying Sealskinz online is a minefield. They keep changing their sizing. At one point their XL Mid Light was only just big enough for me (I wear 9.5 Inov8s). Goodness knows what people with larger feet were supposed to do. The next generation of Mid Lights were suddenly over 1" longer, with no warning or change of design. As well as taking your shoes to the shop you need to consider whether you want your Sealskinz large enough to allow you to wear a thin liner sock inside, and if so try that too. I strongly recommend this, as it allows you to avoid washing them too often, which does them no good.

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions for avoiding icy feet on boggy moors. Although tempted by the idea of a pair of waders, I took the cheaper option of Sealskinz socks. I didn't expect a perfect solution but I have found the Sealskinz do a good job in difficult conditions.
