    Bad quality safety pins

Call me prissy if you will, some do, but in order to do its job effectively a safety pin must be made of good quality spring steel, chromium plated and sharpened properly. Todays safety pins are cheaply made aluminium rubbish which just pull threads in your clothing when you try and pin your number on. It seems like the only place you can buy anything of decent quality these days is at an antiques fair.

The reason that the safety pins from the antiques fair are better is because they are probably made from brass - as were the original safety pins made by it's inventor Walter Hunt. So if you want good quality, new safety pins look for brass ones.

Brass eh, i see. TBH it's not just safety pins, it's everything. Getting hold of quality products these days is like trying to find rocking horse shit. When i buy stainless steel nuts and weshers for the car or whatever, i have to insist on knowing the grade of stainless so i don't end up with that chinese rubbish that, curiously, goes rusty. Drill bits is another good one; nobody will stock Dormer or Presto bits because they're made properly from decent quality HSS and therefore cost a fair bit, all you can get hold of is the rubbish from the far east. I believe there are still small family run cutlery firms in Sheffield dating back to the industrial revolution still making the same fantastic quality tableware that they always did. It's like a cottage industry now, they limp along while most people run to Ikea in their droves to buy far eastern crap that will rust in the dishwasher.
