Re: Races within 15m of Hebden

Been putting some thought into this....

The key is to ID the epi-centre of all these races (or any other cluster)

The idea is to ID the degree of race "concentration"

.....so imagine concentric rings (like the B&Q delivery charge map) around any given town in the UK; 4 rings; 6 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles, and 20 miles.

    So races within 6 miles get 10 points; 10 miles = 7 points; 15 miles = 5 points; 20= 3 points; over 20 miles = 0 points.

The place with the highest points total is the UKs official fell running mecca.

Unfortunately quality of race is not included (or lakes would win) - this is about quantity

Now there's a challenge for a cancelled PBWR team to get stuck into.

Once the place, together with all its associated races has been identified, and formally recognised, there is bound to be some nutter who runs the whole lot in one year. (I'm already looking at my diary)

Trig, you still have not answered jellybabyfairy's concern: Does the entire race route have to be within 15 miles of Hebden? Just the start and finish venue(s)? Or just any miniscule section of the race route? Over to you Trig!
I was a bit of an oddball until I was abducted by aliens; but I'm perfectly OK now!

    Good challenge Donkey.

The Start/Finish must be in one of the concentric circles

I had initially looked at 15 mile radius, but have extended to 20 miles (but with reduced weighting for the outer band)

Using Hebden as an example (but it could be anywhere in UK)
Pendle races might qualify but possibily with lowest points; All the races in Tod, HB, Mytholmroyd, Cragg etc score max points

Time for a map, drawing pins, compass, felt tip pens, and calculator......

Radius to be taken from the Town Hall?

Actually, I don't have time to do this, I just can't resist pedantry.

Do they have to be in the 2012 FRA online calendar? Presumably, to keep it well constrained.
But, single routes with multiple individual races (calendar entries) like Trunce 1 to 9 will count 9 times too for example?
Seems only fair to the RO and competitors.

The Hayfield website lists over 50 peak district fell races within 10 miles of Hayfield - most of them in the FRA calendar.Scroll to the bottom of http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~temples/hc/Perhaps edging on another 50 if you more than double the area to a 15 mile radius (706 vs 314 square miles).
You're right ob1, there's a shed load round this end. Dont tell everyone though otherwise they'll all want to come

Fair point. I agree; FRA calendar only, multiple races count on each running.

Has anyone come up with other contenders other than Ambleside, Hayfield, or Hebden Bridge? Could be also be another town in the vicinty of these possibles

Could somewhere like Colne, Nelson, Haslingden or Rawtenstall maybe pull some different races in to Hebden Bridge whilst maintaining many of their's? Loads of races in East Lancs / Winter Hill / Pendle
