Navigation Courses for runners and walkers in the Peak District

Having run Navigation courses for 3 three years now we believe we have a winning formula.

The Basic Navigation Course is aimed at those with little or no experience of map and compass work and has also proved very popular with those who are not confident of their skills yet.
Discover how contours can be read to give a wealth of information. Master the skills involved in using map and compass. Find out why people get lost and what to do about it if you do.

Items covered on the course include:

    Map Options and scales
    Map setting
Relating the ground to the map and the map to the ground.
    Contours
    Grid references
    Route choice techniques
    Hand railing
    Aiming off
    Catching features
The 5 D’s (the secret to all navigation)
    Target points
    Compass Work
    Pacing and judging distances

A talk on Mountain safety and Mountain Rescue usually follows at the debrief over tea and biscuits.

The Course is based at Woodhead Mountain Rescue Teams Training facility the Woodhead Barn which is on the edge of the Peak District. We use 4 areas dependant on weather.

Based around Langsett, Howden Edge and Bleaklow
The Cost is £50 of which I give a £10 to the Rescue Team for each participant.

We work on a tried and trusted 4:1 ratio, participants meet for tea/biscuits at 8.45 for a 9.00am start. Courses can finish between 5.00- 6.00.

    Re: navigation courses

    Just an update.

I've run more private lessons than the courses this year so if the dates don't suit get in contact and I'll see what we can do.

    The 27th is full
28th has a couple of places left.
I'm now a provider For NNAS courses
so the May 18th & 19th is now a two day Nation Navigation Award Scheme Silver Course which I'm doing for £80 for the two days.
Day one is very similar the basic Nav course but day 2 we spend a full day out in the hills where we can go over day 1 and tighten up your skill and I can assess what you've learnt.

The last Night Navigation course ran last week but I've since been asked If I'll run another. It will mean a late start but if there is interest I'll put one on in 2 weeks after that it's not really practical until next Autumn unless you fancy a Weekend in the lakes with a high camp and we go from the tent.

Have fun on the hills every one. Off up Kinder now on a Dof E trip.
