Head past Aber falls and go up the hill on the right to more or less between Bera Mawr and Bera Bach. Then cut the side of Garnedd Uchaf.

You come into ogwen down the tarmac track from Llugwy res. Go east on the a5 for 100yds or so (marked) then down south over the river and follow big track back west to the campsite at Gwern Gof Isaf. Then head up the right bank of the stream up past a small lake between Glyder Fach and Foel Goch. There is a small trod after a while on the right hand side of the shallow valley as you climb. Head straight over the col, past a check point and pick up the big track down towards Pen y Gwryd. Leave this track at a wall corner and find a small trod that takes you across south of the lake and drop down to Pen y pass.

Well worth a recce. Try going up Pen Yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Llugwy res, ogwen, up as described above and finish over the Glyders. A great day out.

The race is a great outing. Take it easy on the first half. The pyg track seems like a long way.

    Fleeter,
The route is as CrigGoch said; the checkpoints are so placed as to leave you no real route choice. Raccie the bit between Carnedd Dafydd and the checkpoint by Llugwy resr as you can end up cragbound in poor visibility. The approached and crossing of the A5 is on a prescribed route.

The hardest bit nav wise is aberfalls > Carnedd Llewelyn. In clag, like it has been the last few years this is a tricky leg.

Basically up the main aber valley, up to the falls, along the valley above the falls, cross the river and head straight up the banking and through the Beras, traverse along and over the shoulder of Foel Grach then join the main Carneddau trail over CL and CD, from CD come back the same way and descend to a check point by a wall (if the same this year) then head to Fynnon Llugwy and down the horrific concrete road to the A5.

Here head across the road and straight up Nant Yr Ogof and head leftish to the ridge and to Drws Nodded then on to caseg Y Faith and pick up the miners track to descent towards Pen Y Gwryd, but at a wall quite low down, traverse over to Pen Y Pass, sliding around the side of Moel Berfedd.

Here it's simple. Follow the Pyg track to Bwlch Glas, then to Carnedd Ugain and then back to Yr Wyddfa where it finishes. Then jog off down to llanberis or Pen Y Pass.

Decent race. A bit longer than the Peris. A good 25 mins - half hour or so longer. Takes me 4 hrs ish.

There is (was last year) now an additional checkpoint on this leg to remove any chance of being crag bound. It's down on the mountain wall quite far right (as you descend) from the craggy nose.

A great (long!!) day out - haven't done it for years as it has usually clashed with the Welsh Castles Relay which we always do... but this year it's a week before the Castles... hmmmmmm

Re: Welsh 1000 Metre Peaks rac

    Hi

I am wanting to do the short version of this - don't think I am fit enough for the longer one this year.. next year...
Does anyone know is this route I have found on mapmyrun pretty correct for the short version... ie you start from ogwen cottage and go up to llyn bochllwyd from that side of tryfan rather then round to the heather terrace side up the stream .

    http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-k...64#DESCRIPTION

    Thanks

    Emma
