    Billy Blands Splits

Came across the Billy Bland Challenge recently and I was absolutely gobsmacked at his splits for all the legs.

    Leg 1: Billy Bland 2:16
    Leg 2: Billy Bland 2:44
    Leg 3: Billy Bland 3:45
    Leg 4: Billy Bland 3:20
    Leg 5: Billy Bland 1:53
    Total : 13:53

Also - the Billy Bland Challenge interestingly shows that none of the teams came close to his record and there were some good runners there running the legs. Some Challenge legs did actually go faster than Billy's leg times.
How hard do we think the individual leg times are then ? Surely only the top 1% of runners could achieve any one of them, let alone string them all together ?

I supported a 19:32 recently and we did leg 5 in a seemingly "pedestrian" 2:30

The leg 3 split in particular is incredible.

King Billy's time for the BG will stand for a very long time.
Its incredible, a true mountain hardman.

Nowadays there is a marked route on most of the sections and recces to make sure nothing is left to chance.
I wait for the day when theres a nice hard standing path and benches at half mile intervals, then more people can enjoy this mountain challenge.
Maybe a 'Build a BG path' in Trail Running Magazine would help.

The Macc Harriers site used to have Billy's full schedule of his record round but that part of their site doesn't seem to work any more.

I think the first three are very fast but I know of people doing quite close to the times for the last two sections.

I wonder what the splits were for the chap who recently did it in around 15 hours. Mark Palmer? Must be very impressive.

    Re: Billy Blands Splits

Gary tells me that about 20-25 years ago 6 of the best fell running clubs at the time in Britain go together to organise a relay race around the BGR as a 10 man relay to see if they could beat Billys time. Unfortunately the weather was absolutely horrendous so no team got close and he seems to think that only 3 of the teams finished. He would be interested to know if anybody out there has more details or split times. Gary (and Richard Pallister) did the first leg and remembers that he beat Billys time by around 2 minutes finishing with a Keswick pair (Gavin Bland and James Bulman).

Is there a greater record in any sport? I can't think of one. Is there anyone running now who could get near it?
