All sound advice, but as per my initial point are there any lotions and potions that assist the mud to slide off when you're washing down?

I've found that, as I invariably forget to take a towel with me, if I'm really muddy I will probably also have soggy wet socks and these make excellent flannels for a quick scrub of my legs before getting in the car. The added bits of heather and stuff that are often stuck in them are good for exfoliating too Sounds disgusting but it works. Also, on the rare occasions that I moisturise my legs before a run, that definitely seems to help the mud slide off afterwards. Boots Botanics body lotion in case you are wondering.

Back when I was in Guides we used to coat the outside of pans with washing up liquid before cooking over open fires - the soot and grim washed off really easily afterwards. Maybe the same principle can be applied to legs:w00t:! Might find yourself leaving a trail of suds across the fells though if it's really wet.

That's what I do, either that or my top (if I'm changing or adding a layer) then the whole lot goes in a waterproof kit bag to be washed.

Me too. It works very well. Your socks are normally coated in mud on the outside, but they always turn inside-out when you take them off, and they act like special spongy wet leg-washers.
