I have a few friends from Peterborough (fenlands), that would like to have a go at a fell race, is this wise ? if so which wkend race would be recommended? bearing in mind that like myself they will not be up front..

The Lakeland Trail series are a good start - not cheap but well organized - much rougher than a cross country race - sort of "fell - lite".

Can they navigate? Which area are you looking?

Either look at a local race or take in an FRA race camp over night then do a BOFRA race on the sunday.

    BOFRA races http://www.bofra.co.uk/fixtures.php

    Enjoy 33

Well these days it seems that Borrowdale is the traditional first fell race of choice for those who have no idea what they are doing.

However a better option might be the Lakeland Country Fair race up and down Coniston Old Man from Torver. Out and back route, up a proper fell, not too rocky and on a good day you can see the finish from the top, but best set your compass for the direction off the summit if the clag is down. Unlike the Lakeland Trails this is an unmarked course and is steep, but it is cheap and they throw in terrier racing and other delights for free!

    Peak District is closest
a good step up from trail/cross-country would be Teggs Nose (11th August) - run off the Macclesfield sheepdog trials event
if you want bigger hills there's Crowden Horseshoe (29th July)
Scramble the rock face through the glare of morning sun — to run

Support your local events - much more friendly and rewarding as you get to meet other runners in your area and see more of your local landscape - where are you based?

Think you will find that 'Peterborough' and 'local fell races' are mutually exclusive

Ahh! Thought you were up here somewhere and your friends were coming up....
in that case its dead easy HEPTONSTALL FESTIVAL FELL RACE - 7th JULY - a well flagged, 6 mile route, which requires little nav, but loads of effort.
1500 foot of climbing makes it tough - but anyone could do it if they were regular runner used to 10 mile flat runs and above.
:thumbup:I am the RO so I am totally biased! but it would be pleasure to meet you....hope you can join us???

The rewarding view from the top -
