    Long Mynd Hike 2012

Entries opened at 8am last Tuesday - 13 hours later the event was full with 570 entrants and the waiting list is full too with 170 names. Why? How does this happen? They don't advertise, its not the best rourte you could devise in Shropshire. For £25 its not cheap given that all you get at checkpoints is squash, tea and a rather noxious powdered soup and at the end you only get breakfast if you hang around till 7am. There is an awful lot of road - especially now you can't cut up through the woods to Black Rhadley and yet its sold out immediately. Of course I will be doing it because its only just down the road and its a bit like Christmas - it comes up every year and there is no getting away from it. But who are all the other 569 entrants and why have they set an alarm in their diary - 8am, enter long Mynd Hike?

I just think it is a shame that they can't accept more entries than they do. The Long Mynd Hike seems to be the closest thing we have in this country to the UTMB and I just think it would be good to see it being a bigger event. It's the only ultra running event in the UK where I have seen the local population getting out there and really supporting the race. I think its a great event.

I agree Janet, I only did it the once (my first 50) and have no interest in doing it again. The culinary highlight was finding some leftover salted peanuts - only food I ever found - we were grouped up at dusk, which I hated and we lost well over an hour to the finish. Arrived at the finish feeling like running another 20 miles at a decent pace......and there was no sodding breakfast, I DON'T BELEIVE IT!!! Surely somebody could cook something?

Think it's a cult thing, bit like the "Across Wales " was (the Rotary club one in June), when every man and woman turned out once a year to claim 12 months of bragging rights in the local pub.
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.
