    Antibiotics

I've not run for three weeks with a heavy cold and am now on antibiotics for a sinus infection. Feeling quite fed up and not sure how much is lack of exercise and how much illness.

Do fellow forumites think I should start running again or rest for another week?

A hard one, I had a similar thing last year and it worked it's way down into Bronchitis, I generally gauge this sort of thing on whether I have the 'aches' if I have I don't run, and also use the 'wife idiot scale' if she says i'm a total idiot for going out I generally don't as she tends to be right and the 'I told you so's' are worse than not running'.

A general rule of thumb I use is that if it is above the neck, you are OK to run (at an easy exertion level) but below the neck, it's usually better to rest. Go for a short run and make a judgement call....

Depends how you feel. If you feel ok, go for it take it easy. If the infection is making you feel tired and washed out leave it until you feel fit again.
I'm getting on for five weeks not running now, viral infection, followed by a throat infection followed by a cold. You can imagine how much fun it is at my house.
Take it easy go for a few walks and relax. It will still be there in a couple of weeks.

    Re: Antibiotics

subclinical myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle related to an infection elsewhere and not noticed as causing any symptoms in the heart) is a rare but real entity and occasional cause of sudden cardiac death. I wouldn't train if on antibiotics for a sinus / respiratory tract infection or was very feverish or had a bad cold or flu

ps (maybe relevant) I'm a cardiologist, not just read it in the Mail

That's pretty much what my GP said to me when I went to see him a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks guys, frustrating but given i feel washed out I probably need another week until I finish the antibiotics.

Subclinical myocarditis causing sudden death must be pretty rare. As antibiotics are not effective against viral infections presumably the advice not to train whilst on them is general, or if related to the possibility of myocarditis, a delaying measure.

    Re: Antibiotics

    Hi Mike

yes it's rare but it does happen and both myself and my fell running pathologist friend have seen it (he has seen several cases over the years) - so why chance it? Then there's the potential link with DCM and CFS..... I'm taking the ABx prescription as a likely indicator of severity and/or duration of infection rather than likely causative agent - which IME is often the way it happens (not a side swipe at GPs - think you may be one? - maybe more a reflection of what comes to us with sequae etc). We do of course also see myopericarditis cases who have had a bacterial resp infection. Not trying to cause general panic, just giving my own approach based on some specialist knowledge and experiences - YMMV as they say - but I do shudder a bit to see the widespread "you'll be reet" attitude to training whilst virally ill

    Cheers P
