    Dark Mountains

Anyone else doing this new one from Shane Ohly? A 2-day mountain marathon condensed into one very long night...

On Oct 17th Shane Ohly wrote about the Dragon's Back,

"To be quite frank, I think that the generally, slower than expected speed of the 2012 competitors is a reflection of the generally lower quality of the runners compared to the 1992 field."

As a generally lowest of the low fell runner I will be sticking to events organised by people who respect competitors of all abilities and not just the Elite.

Shane has changed the format of next year's GL3D - for the first time ever there will be official A and B courses in addition to the traditional Elite.

    Just saying.

That's per team so £45 each. At the very expensive end of fell running, but at the very cheap end of commercial events (£125 per person for a 1-day run along Hadrian's Wall?).

We've paid for it using the money we won't be spending on the LAMM.

Was well aware it was for a team of two.

Still too much for my tastes.

Have a look at http://explorerevents.co.uk/index.htm A bit of a way off as it's in September but looks really interesting and I like the ethos of "For the beginner and the Elite". Richard Patton has been involved with the Dark and White events which I have always found to cater for everybody and at £25 for the 12 hour course it's much better value.

    Re: Dark Mountains

£90 seems a fair price for a MM compared to the others on offer in the calendar? They're always expensive when compared to fell races?
And I don't think Shane is in the least Elitist in his comments, the standards of running in general are worse than 20/30 years ago, that's not elitist, it's a fact. You've only got to look at the Lakeland classics (on the men's side), and the most recent record is what, 1997? The women's are more recent but then more women do long races nowadays. Same goes for British marathon running, Snowdon, Ben Nevis etc

Stop whinging and either have a go or don't. Or organise a petty reposte such as the Dragons Belly instead.
