Seems not an entirely commercial venture....
Giving back
10 Peaks was created in August 2009 by Paul Smith to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and as a legacy for his father, John, who lost his battle with cancer shortly before his 62nd birthday. In the first three years, the event has raised over £80,000 for Macmillan.

Hi Andy K, Wheeze, molehill, dominion & Hanneke
You've got this all wrong I'm afraid. I have nothing whatsoever to do with the organising of this race. The only race that I organise on an annual basis is a fell race which is in the FRA and WFRA calendar.
I particularly enjoy the longer runs in the Brecon Beacons particularly those organised by Might Contain Nuts and Likeys. I came across the 10 Peaks a month or two ago and thought it looked a great event.
I regularly do the linear route from Llanddeusant to Pen-y-Fan as a training run which is tough but this is on another level!
Sorry to disappoint.
Apologies... think it may have to do with it being your first post, flagging it up as 'advertising' but as said before, I personally don't object to that, as it actually flags an event up that the FRA forum community may well be interested in.
I am still wanting to do a South Wales Traverse one day...

GD44 - hugely disappointed !
apologies
The organiser of the 10Peaks races hides behind the pseudonym 10Peaks
And to add to Boy Wonder's post, I think the first year it was run in the Lakes it was actually free to enter with a minimum amount to be raised for Macmillans.
The land at the end of our toes goes on and on and on.
Sorry about that gd. Like Andy I thought it looked fishy!

I have just been made aware of this thread and I can assure you I don't know GD44! I am the race organiser and I set up 10peaks in 2009 running the first event in 2010 in the Lakes. As pointed out it was free to enter but I want to run the event properly and that costs money. The entry fee of £75 is the same as the Lakeland 100 I think? And for your £75 you get camping, a hot meal or two, fully stocked aid stations, a Harvey map, T-shirt, medal, goody bag and medical support. Each year we donate money to charity and over the past three years have raised over £80,000 through sponsorship and donations! In the past it has been cheaper to enter but sponsorship has been encouraged. Many competitors, who race regularly, asked if I could raise the entry fee and make fundraising optional which is what I have done.
I'm also nothing to do with the organiser of the 10Peaks, and I rarely have anything positive to say.
However, controversy over fundraising aside, the Brecon course looks fabulous.
Yeah, but if you read on, you will see the 10 Peaks trophy is given to the person who raises the most money for charity. So the implication is that at least some of that £80k is raised by the individuals in addition to the race fee.
Charitable connections are used to gloss over all kinds of other activities and agendas. Forgive me for sounding cynical but I think 2 recent events kind of prove the point.
Not saying that this is the case here. But I do think we should discuss the creeping commercialization of the wilderness....otherwise there will be no wilderness left.
