Thanks for all the kind words!

Steve Ashworth has the fastest albeit not ratified time 18.46.

There has been a lot of talk about it not being about records etc and I fully agree with the sentiment behind that - the BG is a personal challenge ....but that fastest time does give something to aim for

Would be great to see a ratified time at that pace!

Re: winter round 24th Feb 2013

We had a bit of discussion about Steve Ashworth's winter round. While it's true that for the majority of the round he was alone it was felt that it would be churlish not to record the round given the time he did it in. After all one of the BG club's roles is to record long distance runs within the Lake District. The winter rounds page on the club website makes clear (I hope) the above.

A handful of people have done a winter round as their qualifying round and have followed the same requirements as for summer rounds, namely that the visit of each summit is witnessed. Most winter rounds are by individuals who are already club members so there's an element of trust - "He's a good egg" and all that. Winter rounds (and even attempts) are sufficiently rare that for the moment at least I'm inclined to maintain records of all of them regardless of whether they are qualifying rounds or not. Whether those details appear on the club site is more open to debate.

I agree that it's all a bit arbitrary but Steve himself hasn't suggested that his round should be the record or that it should be a qualifying round but by including it in the list it shows what is possible. In a way, given the huge variability of winter conditions, I prefer the American concept of "Fastest Known Time" rather than record.

Why not do the same for summer rounds? Partly tradition but also there is a safety element in having pacers/partners out on the fells. (I'm aware of the contradiction in then recording a solo winter round) There's also the social aspect which I'm sure many will agree is a large part of the round in itself.

I think (but am not absolutely sure) that Steve's winter round is the only one listed on the club's site that isn't ratified or by an existing club member.

Anyone that attempts a BG is a certified star in my book. Anyone that attempts any in winter doubly so! I've just struggled around leg #2 and I'm guess the snow/iice is considerably less than it was on the 24th. Seat Sandal must have been pretty tricky on its own! Definately a fine effort whichever way you look at it!

@Old 'Un. Nothing that will stop you. But it has filled the main paths in places - the Dodds, Helvellyn, not too bad up Fairfield, Seat Sandal the path is filled, hard pack snow but with plenty of steps kicked in.
