    Training Runs - South Peaks

    Hi

I'm just getting into fell running, but live in Nottingham (not well known for it's hills). Can anyone advise of any good training routes around nottingham/south peak district area e.g. Matlock.

    Thanks

    Ian

I would have a search for a book of walks covering the south peaks area.

Also just get the appropriate 25,000 scale OS map and see what catches your attention. Running around reservoirs can be a start

Nottingham here too (well Chilwell), quite a lot of the time anyway... You may find this website useful: http://peaktrailrunner.freehostia.co...tpage&Itemid=1. Mix of trail and fell, but useful for a starter for 10. TBH I use that site to give me an idea of an area and then just head off wherever my nose takes me though.

There's great running in the woods between Ambergate and Cromford. Lots of rocks and drops, and some good long climbs.
Shining Cliff Woods, Crich Chase (up to Crich Stand), Black Rock and Big Plantation.

Use Cromford Canal/Derwent Valley Heritage Way and the Midshires Way to link routes up.

Hi Ian. I live in Belper near Matlock and run / race all the time off road. There's a fell race tmrw which is perfect for newbies, from the Bear at Alderwasley, Peak Pits I think the race is called through Shining Cliff woods, 2 laps normally. As hard as u wanna make it. Head down, I'll be in my Belper Harriers top so say hello. Also look on my blog. Our ultra tour de Matlock bath route (UTMB) is all off road and links lots a good running up in the valley. Lots of other gpx's on there from other local race routes too. Further north is another kettle of fish - areas like Castleton and Edale start yo get into the real deal but they are a good way fm Nottingham. Good luck

UTMB looks a good route Alan. Have you done the FTOP (Full Tour Of Pentrich)? :w00t:

Fab, I'm just starting out too and this is really handy for me. Will go and explore.
