    Scottish Haute Route

Being for the benefit of Mr IainR.

Rather than continue discussion about the SHR in the other thread I thought I'd start one that may be found at some time in the future

The SHR was originally described in the SMC Journal of 1987 by David Grieve. It consisted of six stages using mountain bothies as overnight accommodation and as the name suggests was conceived as a home grown alternative to the better known ski itinerary of the same name between Chamonix and Zermatt. So...

Stage 1: Crathie, Corndavon Lodge, Ben Avon, Beinn a Bhuird, Hutchison Hut.
Stage 2: Ben Macdui, Lairig Ghru, Cairn Toul, Moine Mor. Ruigh-aiteachan bothy in Glen Feshie
Stage 3: Carn Dearg Mor, Tromie Dam, Carn na Caim, Dalwhinnie
Stage 4: The Fara, Culra Lodge, Ben Alder, Ben Alder cottage
Stage 5: Sgor Gaibhre, Corrour Lodge, Ben na Lap, Staoineag bothy
Stage 6: Sgurr Choinnich Mor, Aonach Beag, Carn Mor Dearg, Ben Nevis, Fort William.

    Hope this is of interest.

    Brilliant, Thanks for that.

Been looking at transport options, looks a great route, but sadly dogs aren't allowed on Citylink buses, so I'll have to find dog sitters.

    Cheers

Not sure if there is any more usable (to runners) info in the article. Having been up in the Hutchison hut - Beinn a Bhuird area last year, I reckon that from Ben Avon to Ben Macdui is runnable ground - either short heather or arctic style vegetation. Don't know about the rest of the line except for the last two miles or so to Culra bothy which is a good track (we were mountain biking on it)

    definitely one for the future.

the tedious bit is from the main cairngorms to dalwhinnie. other than that, looks good.

    Re: Scottish Haute Route

I was looking at the route last night on Anquet and some OS maps of the area; it's a long way. Even splitting it into 3 day sections leaves some very big days out, but it looks a great route. In winter walking/running it would take a fair few days for me, but I wouldn't mind doing it in summer first if I can sort out the transport. I think the best option may be driving to FW then a bus down to Perth, then back up to Braemar.
