I am trying out training by HRM, and have been used to schedule training terms such as "tempo run", "5k pace", "10k pace" etc, - does anyone know what these terms mean in terms of % max HR?
Thanks,
Derek.

I've just bought a HRM and am puzzled by what my maximum heart rate should be. Went out on my push bike the other day and managed to get it upto 200 BPM. As I'm 33 I think that is too high. Am i going to die?!!!
Fitness can't be stored. It must be earned over and over, indefinitely.
Thanks Harry. I think I need to buy a book on what it all means!
I'm sure you won't die. But just in case, what sort of bike is it, approx second hand value and what is the name and address of your next of kin?
The estimated MHRs from age etc are a load of poo and if you want to know your own do a maximal stress test
I have just been doing some work with Bangor University to do with post exercise carbohydrate intake and immune function. This basically involved 3 sessions of 2hours on the treadmill at approx 60-70% MHR followed by recovery drinks at various times or just water and shed loads of blood, saliva and urine samples. It was great fun. But before all this I had to do a max test on the treadmill. Previous to this I had done a wingate test on a bike at the start of the year for some other trial and my MHR was 93, but I've seen higher than that when sprinting at the end of a race or at moments on steep climbs etc, quite often at 193 or 194 and over 190 for long periods continously and 1 hour - 2 hours at average of 186-190bpm. On the max test it got to 200 and I bottled it. Afterwards I was peed off as I actually felt fine. I'm 36. I have been told that I would pass out before anything nasty is likely to happen as everything is in good working order (it has to be to go that fast). I'm not worried about it now, as it seems I'm just a high ticker...with the MHR of a teenager.
2 hours on the treadmill!! Jesus i cant do 10 mins without getting bored
I wore my new HRM whilst hill running for the first time on Saturday. I've previously worn it for steady flat runs, circuit training and cycling(mtb singlespeed and road), but the heart rates during hill running surprised me.
During 2 hours running around the Clwydians I hit a max of 193bpm and was above 180 for much of the climbing. I assume my threshold is higher than I'd previously thought.
I guess there's not much point trying to keep the heart-rate down on terrain like that and just treat it as hard intervals.
