back to back vs long runs

All, I'm finding increasingly difficult to allocate time for my longer runs (18/25 miles), thus I was wondering whether by introducing back to back 10/12 miles runs I would be able to achieve the same objectives; currently I'm gearing up for a hilly marathon in Lulworth Cove in Dorset in Dec. Any advice will be greatly appreciated Thanks Sebastian

Off the top of my head, and limited experience of marathon training per se, but having spent the last 5 or 6 years doing bits for long events. I'd say 18 mile in training is enough, I did a couple of 20's before my two marathons. The only caveat being I wasn't/am not very quick!! I'd say do 18+ when you get the chance otherwise do as you say back to back 10/12+, but do them quicker.

i did some of my best races doing back to back training
i would do a 3 hour plus run on the sat followed by a 2 hour plus run sunday
just make sure all the recovery drinks and feed are in place

thanks for your replies, that sounds promising; I'll strive to fit in some longer runs as I tend to struggle from 18/20 miles onwards, especially when elevated, though failing that will continue back to back half marathon distances

I would try and find the time for the long runs. Sorry. I think training needs to be specific and if you struggle at 18/20 miles you need to train beyond that.

Re: back to back vs long runs

I do recognise the significance of longer runs, as these allowed me to progress; by increasing mileage (as well as adding hill reps) during my sessions, speed/average pace appeared to have benefited. Deadlegs ' you need to train beyond that', I have to make suitable arrangements to do just that, as my primary goal is to be able to race comfortably Thanks
