The guy at the front deserved to lose for that crap little dance he was doing!
A punch should stay like a treasure in the sleeve. It should not be used indiscrimately.

I would have been straight past, unless someone has guided me around a route or helped me out some other way its all fair.

I well remember Billy Bland following a lad from our club ( Bobby Ashworth ) around the Chew Valley race route. Bob who was a useless navigator , for some reason had a special knack of finding his way around when it came to this race. When they came into the finish field Billy stepped back to let Bob win. Finish line etiquette, good manners or great sportsmanship ? Call it what you will.

Nice story. I've not heard it before.

At the risk of repeating this story............

I was doing The Wharfedale Off Road Marathon a couple of years back & coming down the last footpath before you turn left in to the rugby club & the finish. I was in 3rd place with a certain forumite a few yards in front in 2nd. Anyway, at the end of the snicket he turned right & I instinctively shouted him back. I couldn't have celebrated 2nd place letting someone go wrong at the end of a race.

I used to be Bobby's milkman back in the 1980s. Funny I was just talking about him last with with Ged Navan at Pendleton. Good guy.
