You'll have major problems with mud and clearance no matter what you do

For a one off, give it a go. What have you got to lose? 28mm Continental Twister might do the job. Doubt you'll fit much wider, and if it's muddy you will be stopping to clear the mud off regularly.

A mountain bike might be more appropriate until you really get into it and then buy a proper crosser.

    Now we're getting somewhere.

I thoroughly recommend getting a 29er and/or 650b. Keep the Allez as a road bike, then buy a cross bike anyway.

Eventually you'll need to relegate the Allez to commuting work. And buy some plastic fantastic/steel chic/titanium wonder bike as a 'only when it's dry' road bike. Something so expensive you feel slightly ashamed to ride it.

Do you ride at trail centres, if so, make sure the you get a 29er hardtail, then buy either a 26er with masses of suspension that turn gnarr factor 11 trails into smooth canal tow paths. Or some high end 650b that "brings the trails alive man!!!'

    Glad to be of service.
