I was staying up at Brough this weekend and was reading a book on the history of Stainmore (Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby etc.). It had in it a section on the now dismantled South Stainmore Railway which ran from Durham or somewhere near to Tebay; through places such as Bowes Moor, Barras, and Kirkby Stephen. Barras station is the subject of a painting called The Plains of Heaven which now hangs in the Tate Gallery, and the view is said to be the best view from a railway station in all of the country. During the very harsh winter of 1933 locomotives became stranded on the line and were soon buried completely, even snow ploughs could not get through. The snow in some of the cuttings was 45 feet deep, and by the end of the winter was packed so hard it had to be blasted out by men with explosives. That's weather worthy of news, but it was probably commonplace in those days.

The odd one or two snow flurries were making headline news on Look North tonight. Early morning commuters on the outskirts of Leeds were having a nightmare battling the treacherous 3cm snowfall, with those in the Calverly area desperately persisting with their annual attempt to make tarmac only tyres work in the snow. A slightly chilly looking journalist gave a brave report from the M62 where traffic was flowing freely, and the evil white stuff was nowhere to be seen. The weather with Paul Hudson made grim viewing; there is literally another cm or so in the forecast and hundreds of schools will preparing to call their second snow day on the trot.

Fog, not scary enough for a weather warning really, or maybe they know something we don't and it's The Fog...
It's all over the news, i think the plagues of Egypt have come by the looks of it, visiblity was literally down to 200yds this morning.

The fog wasn't too bad today. The half-wits with their red lights on were the real problem
Plenty of very thick fog near the airport (LBA) on my way home from work tonight, plus a large amount of halfwits driving with full beam on

Been out with the dogs and it's a very strong wind with driving rain on the tops of the Pennines
Standard autumn weather then.
