    Viral chest infection

I developed a viral chest infection ( had a cold, thought i could train through it. Learned my lesson there) . I'm still a bit rattly in the chest, can i start training again. Its been more than a week. I have taken all the antibiotics.

    Careful with this one,

I did exactly the same around xmas last year and it kicked off all sorts of problems making relatively non existant ashtma, into sligthly worse asthma.

It depends if the antibiotics have completely cleared it. I had the same thing last November - ran few recces with what I thought was a cold but was indeed a virul chest infection - 2 doses of penicillin later and I missed the race I was training for but decided to do a much shorter one as I'd finished the tablets.

I clearly wasn't over the infection as in fact suffered for weeks after and didn't really get rid of it properly for quite some time - perhaps had i taken more time off running/training it wouldn't have been so bad

take it easy and make sure you've shifted it

Why were you given Antibiotics for a viral infection?

Anyway, if you feel free of a cough you should be OK, but once in the chest always be careful how soon you train, with head colds I keep training, but chests are more serious.

Still coughing a bit. I think i will miss out tonights race just to be on the safe side. Are Antibiotics not right ( i was also given an asthma type inhaler and some antihistamine, i have had slight hay fever in the past)?

I've always thought antibiotics were anti-bacterial and not effective on virus's.

Exactly what I thought too. Antibiotics won't do anything to clear up a virus.

So the week in bed sweating profusely was probably what fixed it then!

Probably, that's the problems with virus's, you just have to let your body win the battle, that's why the temperature is raised etc.

Maybe they worried about secondary bacterial infections due to a weakened immune system through fighting the virus, or an opportunistic bacterial infection exploiting areas damaged by the virus.

This type of thing bugered me for most of last November and December and kicked of the asthma as well. I ended up with a about 2 months off running and biking but did keep swimming (indoors) and hammered the power breather. OK now - thank the big chief!
