I hear it's against international law for people within a region of a country to vote to be part of another country or to be independent without the rest of the country agreeing.

    That seems unfair to me.

I understand if this were not the case, it would be open to abuse.

But back to Ukraine, I'm pretty sure you can't have a referendum with foreign troops on your soil.

    Somebody should tell Wee Eck

So, who has dibs on the longest 'ownership' of Crimea, Ukraine or Russia?

On the wireless this morning, I heard that Khrushchev gave it to Ukraine in 1954. Before this it was Russian for ages. The 'gift' to Ukraine was largely an administrative transfer (perhaps for cost reasons), since the Moscow government owned it all.

I find this whole thread very uncomfortable because I find myself agreeing with Carlos...

Kerry is as trustworthy as the rat he is; Hague's judgement is as flawed as when he decided to back Al-Qaeda terrorism in Syria; and the Kiev coup leaders stating that the proposed 16th March referendum in Crimea is "unlawful and unconstitutional" is such an ironic position to take it would be laughable if it were not such a serious position. So we can kick out an elected government but a region can't hold an democratic referendum.

And OUR government backs these jokers...??? Not in our name...

Blimey Carlos...look what they driven me too... (I still ain't gonna agree with you on anything else tho pal!)

I don't really see how relevant that is? Is that the way we are creating borders now?

There has to be new elections..

The current coalition weren't voted in, regardless of the last governments legitimacy that cant justify a new undemocratic government.

On Crimea, I think see, hold new fair elections then see what is after that, maybe set a date for a referendum in 24 months or something so there is a chance of a united Ukraine.

Like Shaunetto I dont trust anyone on this right now, I dont think anyone sits in the middle with no political interest, the EU, US or Russia.

    Have they?

The article you linked simply says it lost official status. Which is of course a very different thing to being banned. Would have thought the official language of Ukraine should be Ukranian.
