Plenty of races uses SI cards but are obliged to have race numbers fixed to vests if they want to use FRA insurance. Barmy, but not worth mentioning. Except I just have ;-)

Si Cards can be lost or broken or fail. Hence the good old back up system of numbers on chests. If the last runner back at Wasdale had not been recorded properly through checkpoints and he had failed to return then there was a very real possibility of a poor outcome! Surely no-one wants to risk lives?
