Twist and pull. Although I'm sure I heard the method you described being touted recently as the better option.

Well 2 weeks backpacking / wild camping accross Scotland, 240 miles plus covered and not a single tick on either myself or wife decided not to use any chemical based deterrent just carried tick twister which was not used.
Be interesting to see if I get ticks again now I am back home.

Guess we got lucky our route took us from Oban - Stonehaven (I have a tracker trace of the route, I may put up when I get time). so the ticks had plenty of of chance, although not wishing to pollute the burns with soap etc we used a sanitiser for personal hygiene and just maybe the Ticks did not like it
Have to say I don`t envy your count of 25 though
