50m on the bike today, up to the craven arms and back. The fallen tree straining the telephony cables on the way into the village has still not been dealt with, if they don't sort it out there will probably be a few hundred meters of cables to replace before long. Very hard to get traction on the chevin on the way back, back wheel was slipping sideways on every pedal turn. It was so mild I derobed for the ride back, the three pints of ale gave me a good beer jacket.

10k with horsforth harriers last night, it was refreshing to run it all at 9m15 MMP, as I normally go with the earlier slower group. Emma Glasbey of Look North fame regaled us with a tale of how she had to take cover in the witness box of a courtroom, when it kicked off during sentencing at a case she was covering.

An interesting discussion also broke out between the group leader, who is a running coach, and someone suffering injury problems. The leader was in favour of improving strength and overall conditioning with specific sessions of running and static exercises: not an approach they has ever served me. I chipped in with my twopenneth stating that repetitive injury is down to instability and tiny discrepancies in proprioception from person to person, biomechanics in general. This being a root cause I can personally testify to looking back on my years of problems and dead ended solutions. I don't think you can really prognosticate about injury too much until you've been beaten by it like a ginger stepchild.

Manky old afternoon and tight feeling calves from undergoing 'Iron Calf Training' for wansfell, but i got out onto the track which was full of puddles.

2x 1 mile tempo, with a steady mile in between; 6.45, 6.50, the wind was a headache.
3x 100m off 300m steady rests; 15, 14, 15, i had realised the last 100 of the track was out of the wind so decided to use it, i don't normally do 100's.
Luke Appleyard (Wharfedale)- quick on the dissent

The inevitable anxiety of another xmas day woke me up early, so I went to Bramley parkrun, a soggy run with plenty of stodge underfoot. I faded quite badly and wheezed home in 20.57, it wasn't the sort of run that would bathe one in the glory of a sterling performance. I'd stayed up to watch father ted episodes till 11.30 the previous night, so wasn't well rested, but I gave it everything I had on the day.

Straight back and after a change of duds straight out to the craven arms, usual 50m out and back. The wind coming down the valley was a bit strong, and I was surprised to reach the boozer in an embarrassing 1h42m. I may have mentioned before how many very fit women go in this ale house on Dec 25th, it's always nice to catch their attention and say hi as they pass by. I felt quite depressed on the ride up, but the company and the four pints of hetton pale ale drowned it out. There were various nibbles on offer including roast potatoes and gravy, Yorkshire pudding dippers, and pigs in blankets; I stuffed as much as I could down my neck knowing I'd need calories to get me home. I left at 2pm with one hell of a beer jacket, and immediately found out that my legs were ruined. I've doubled down with parkrun and craven arms many times before, but never felt this bollocksed; I didn't even make it to addingham without stopping for an energy bar. Memories of the lovely women I'd seen in appletreewick were all that kept me going.

4 pints! I am surprised you were still conscious, much less riding a bike. Well done on getting home in one piece.

I haven't drunk 4 pints in one session since I was a student - unless you include wine.

A certain Mr Mason was spotted jogging past. I was going to go out and shout wharfedale harriers at him as he disappeared off down the hill, but I'd never have got to the door in time. Quite a few people were commenting on how he gets seen doing mad things like running in fields and up hills two days in succession.

I've donated a vintage Mepps Aglia No.3 for the walls of the tap room, to bolster David's collection of display vintage fishing tackle. It has 'British Patent Brevete France' stamped on the blade, which makes it anywhere up to 70yrs old.
