I was reading the navigation section of M&L only yesterday (3rd edition I'm afraid). I'd been getting worried and confused about how to interpret contour lines, but was soon reassured by Eric Langmuir's explanation - that's a relief I thought.....

I dont want to start the whole debate again but I particularly welcome the advice to take windproofs on dry days. In other words get the forecast, assess the conditions, make a judgement and on a lot of occasions windproofs that are worn will be far superior to waterproofs that are sitting in a bumbag because they are less comfortable to run in.
