I once ran up one way and back the other. Carlside route was 0.5 mile shorter. If I was going AC and pressed for time then I would probably opt to come down that way but on my own round I went up back o Latrigg etc

I have a recce planned going up via Carl Side, down via Jenkin Hill and then reversing it. It is not actually for BG (I did that in 2011) but for 10 Peaks in June. This adds a further dimension as it will be at the end of a long day as opposed to the first climb of the day.
10 Peaks: You might have to take into account the position of the previous checkpoint.

Yes I'm assuming that is why the suggested route they show goes up Carl Side.

I'd love to get that BG thread printed off, but it'll use an awful lot of paper I think! Great thread!...as is the 10,000' yin!

Of course, the suggested route isn't everywhere the best.

Going up Carlside is steep. It is not only harder on the legs but on the head too. Climbing a steep gradient like that is a comitted effort, if you saunter up you'll end up slow, as such it is quite stressy, not what you want 20 minutes into your BG. I found the Latrigg route easier, quicker and more relaxed.
