    Beer

Alcohol has a bad press, does anyone have any experience of abstaining from booze?

I don't tend to drink the day before a run or the week before a race, obviously (as experienced) running with a hang over is a true pain in the arse.

My moto so far has been 'a little bit of what you fancy never does you any harm'..

Well Kenny Stuart certainly didnt abstain from having a beer and he was a fairly handy runner.

I find a pint and a packet of crisps can be a useful pick-me-up if I'm out on a very long day/run!

Loving it. Seems Kenny Stuart had it sorted, I've heard he ate a lot of steak as well.. I'd be happy to follow such a diet!

Abstaining makes you appreciate it even more Andy.

Didn't someone say, "Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder."?

I thought the whole reason that fell races tended to start at 11:30-12:00 was to let you get over your hangover.

I assumed not drinking would be part and parcel of a top runner's preparation, but then saw a top runner having a beer and fish and chips at a pub the night before the Turner Landscape Championship race a year or two ago. He did well in that race too.

On the other hand, I remember reading that Gavin Bland was enjoying his first beer for a year the night he won the British Champs race in, was it Northern Ireland a couple of years ago? So he must've thought abstaining was worthwhile.

I think a pint before a race makes you faster, it's the euphoric effect the alcohol has.
