I plan to do the horsehoe as a training run week on saturday. Is there plenty of water on the tops? Also , from Thunacar Knott , is it easy enough running to Black crags? it looks ok on the map. best route from Esk Hause Shelter to Bow Fell? Retrace route or head to Esk Pike? Everything else seems straightfoward, lol, which i'm sure it's not. A nice long day awaits for me and my faithful hound.
A quality race..
If it is dry there is plenty of water up to the outflow of Angle tarn before the climb up to Esk Hause . You will find the next water half way down the long fast descent before the climb up Blisco, so that is quite a while on the tops if you are going slowish.
The fastest route in the race from Esk Hause is a contour around to the east of Esk Pike that rises gently up to Ore gap. It is pretty rough, slippy and squelchy. (head SE from shelter)

Having run this for the first time in the race itself this year, this route is likely to become my fill in solo fell run of choice when I fancy popping over to the Lakes at a weekend. I loved the course and its just great to stand at the bottom of the valley at the end and see pretty much the ridges of the whole route surrounding you...... weather permitting.
Now that's the figure in the FRA handbook but you'll find it's a lot closer to 12 miles (and barely that) but at least 5000 foot.
Whatever length/height it is it's a great course & a fantastic race.
