    12 bens Connemara

Off to Connemara next week and fancied a few long days out.
There's mention of a12 Ben challenge, not just the classic horseshoe?

Has anyone any route info? Current record? Any good sites to look at or other suggestions.. We're staying out at cleggab on the coast.

The classic horseshoe is the glencoaghan horseshoe. Done it as a walk many years ago probably one of my best ever days in the mountains. It's got everything grass, scrambling and lots of very hard granite.

Doing all 12 (and it is not clear what those 12 actually are!!) does not lend itself to a continuous circuit with three cols in the middle so there would be a lot of out and backs.

    Google 12 bens challange

The other classic mountain in that area is Mweelrea

The place for some advice would be on the IMRA facebook page

Iain it really is a lovely area and so easy to get there now with the motorway from Dublin to Galway

Great thanks for that, I've not been that far out so it'll be good, yeah some list a definite 12 (on wiki) but others say what you said that the 12 isn't so certain..

I agree with Pat, it's a superb day out. If wild and rugged terrain with lots of scrambling, little in the way of paths and a feeling of isolation is your thing, then you'll love it.
I too was not sure what the 12 Pins actually are but my take on it was:
Derryclare, Bencorr, Bencollaghduff, Benbaun, Muckanaght, Bencullagh, retrace steps back to col below Bencollaghduff, Benbreen (the scree run descent on the South side is not to be missed!), Bengower, Benlettery.

    Have a great day out.

Got out yesterday for a quick 7 on the 12 bens, stunning terrain. Pissing down today so off on the road bike. It just does not get dark.

Hoping for a good weather day to get a long day out..
