I overheard a sales assistant in Waitrose today saying that some old shindig called the 'tough mudder' is an absolute nightmare. She describes it as being a bit expensive at £155 for an entry though.

Travs
When I first started fellrunning I remember looking inside a box on Pete Blands stall which contained fell race maps. My first thought was, "I'm gonna do all these".
After completing all the races I've found myself returning to a mixture of these time and again, they're all crackers in their own rights.
The races in question, in no particular order of difficulty-
Anniversary waltz
Borrowdale
Black combe
Buttermere sailbeck
Coniston
Coledale
Duddon
Edale skyline
Fairfield
Ennerdale
Full tour of Pendle
Great lakes
Kentmere
Helvellyn and the dodds
Langdale
Long mynd valley
Nant Peris
Sedburgh hills
Stuc a chroin
Tebay
Three peaks
Teenager with altitude
Three shires
Turner landscape
Wasdale
Not part of the Pete's race maps but well worth doing are Jura and Daz H Buttermere.
Enjoy

A serious one: Holme Moss. I was stood in a bog eating jelly babies riddled with cramp and there was still miles to do

Surprised Kilnsey hasn't had a mention...any fell race that requires you to abseil and all that
Darren Holloway Race (Buttermere)hardest. Wasdale is a close second. For me the rocky terrain of Scafell and direct descent makes it 'easier' than the Daz H race. What makes the Daz H race so epic is
1. the route finding possibilities and rough terrain moving from Newlands to Dale Head, and finding the best way to get to the start of melbreak.
2. Ascending Melbreak.
If you've not done it yet, have a go and you'll see what I mean! It's a proper good 'un!

Like has been said loads of times already, each race is tough in its own right.
From a personal point of view the ones which have knackered me the most are Edale Skyline, Yorkshire 3 Peaks and Wasdale, but I'm sure thats been my own fault by going off far too fast and been unable to maintain the pace, (apart from Wasdale which was just tough full stop)and bonking badly towards the end resulting in me usually feeling horrendous.
3 races that have kicked my arse:
1. Duddon Long
2. Yorkshire 3 peaks. Great race and mostly runnable but bonked on top of Ingleborough. Long and lonely trudge to the finish.
3. Borrowdale. Wobbly legs descending Dale Head.
I had intended to run Wasdale this year but injury forced me out. Aiming for Borrowdale again and this time will be more prepared in terms of refuelling.
