    Back to the original question, travelling at 40mph instead of 25mph for one hour means higher wind resistance, engine working harder and more fuel consumed.

    If you are in the same gear then yes.
    However optimum speed for fuel efficiency is usually low revs in top gear so usually around 50mph.

    I drove 9 hours to Skye, and 9 hours back... half of it was fairly consistent 70-80mph motorway driving, but the other half was absolutely booting it in sport mode through the Highlands... my average mpg went up during that journey...

    In today's cars, I don't think speed matters so much (my motor has 8 gears so it's generally always in a perfect gear to match the road speed)..... it's more likely the stop/start nature of modern journeys which brings the efficiency down...

    55 or 56 mph used to be recognised as the optimum speed for efficiency.

    It's also suggested that cruise control is a benefit on flatter roads.
