Yeah, I think long ultras help. As much mentally as physically. That knowledge that you CAN run for 10 or so hours helps. the main thing is time on your feet, long rounds aren't about speed, just not stopping, eating and plodding on come what may.Originally Posted by daz h
Re training 50 miles is about the same as I do. I do a minimum of 40 but try to keep the height gain quite high. The main thing is getting the long runs in. But I never train over 5 or 6 hrs. After that I think you do yourself so much damage that you should just save that for races. You also can't recover quickly enough to train again. Even for the 96 miler, I only ran 3 long distance runs in the year prior; I ran 40 miles last september, 53 miles in April, then 96 miles in June. I had plenty of 3-5 hr fell runs in, which have a lot less distance involved, a max of 20 miles really.
Ultras are basically a mix of physical strength, mental strength and nutrition.
For my paddy Buckley I just followed the 10,000 ft of ascent a week rule, and made sure that my average weekly ascent over a whole year was that. Some said that was too much, but I found all the hills comfortable until the last few.
I may be interested in a few recces this winter if you fancy joining up for a few runs as I don't know the Lakes well at all. I'd also be interested in pacing for any attempts as I'm thinking of a BGR myself. it's also handy re the car situation to have a few people doing recces of the legs it together.
im very unsure of how my body will react after say 30miles on my feet
i know it wont be like racing which really takes it out of me but i want to learn to pace myself
yes any recces around the BG would be interested.
Oh thinking about it, the year I did it I'm sure there was 3 start times, walkers at 6 am, slow runners at 7 am and fast at 8 am. We set off at 7 am, I remember passing all the walkers (some far further in than you'd have thought), and then the front runners from the 8 am start passing us later in the day (in fact the leader passed us way early on).
We'll all tie bits of string to one another then we don't get lost!
Oh ans Iain i had an email from the organiser it seems that all runners will be going at 7 as oppose to being given the option of the 6am start with the walkers - just thought I'd let you know

i think we could easily get lost on this course.
don't worry the road book (strip picture book) thing that they give you is very very easy to follow. Just make sure you follow it from the start so you know where you are. I made the mistake of just following everyone else until we got spread out then it took me ages to identify where I was on road book. Apart from that it's brill and I wish some other races (bullock smithy) would adopt this approach.
